Magentoではなぜかデフォルトでメールが一切飛ばない設定となっています。なので、設定をしなければ注文確認メールなどは飛びません。
順調に設定できていたのに、『え！メールが飛ばないんだけど・・・』と、焦った方、安心してください。
管理者画面で下記を行えば一発ＯＫ！
１．システム-設定をクリック
２．左サイドバーの一番下、『高度な設定』-『システム』を選択
３．上から二番目のアコーディオンメニューに『メール送信設定』というのがあります。ここで『メール送信を行わない』を”いいえ”にする

追記：2015年2月13日
上記を実施してもメールが飛ばない場合の手順です。
MagentoはLinixにインストールした場合、メールサーバとしてlocalhostを利用できないようです。以前はそんなことなかったような気がするのですが、SMTPの設定画面に行くと「Windowsサーバのみ」的なことが書いてあります。
どうやって解決するかというと、「SMTP Pro Email」というExtensionをインストールします。無料です。

有効化するには一度ログアウトして再度ログインしましょう。
すると、System -> Configuration とすすみ、左のバーに Aschroder Extensionsというメニューができていますので、その中にあるSMTP Proをクリックしましょう。
